My Archives: September 2003

One of those hot and humid days when it makes no sense to spend any time outside, so of course I go lugging the view camera and pinhole around Fells Point. Nothing particularly inspiring popped out for me, though I did play with some architectural shots and others as excuses to practice with using the cmaera movements. All in all a kind of visually frustrating day, with a flat gray light. Just enough of a breeze to snatch the dark cloth off of my head but not enough of one to cool me down.

Did have a nice encounter with a fellow playing his fiddle on the street. The lilting strains of "Ashokan Farewell", the theme from the PBS Civil War series, slowly swept across the hot sidewalk as I was focusing on a deserted storefront. After I'd gotten the shot, I approached the fiddler and asked if he'd mind being part of my pinhole musicians series. I hadn't worked on it for months but saw no need to let a good project slip away when an opportunity like this presented itself. Rather than have him try to remain absolutely motionless during the long pinhole exposure, I took a few shots with times between 10 and 30 seconds while he played away. Haven't developed the film yet, so no idea how well it worked. He could be one massive blur, or his face and fiddle may be visible with his hands and bow turned into ghosts by motion.
