My Archives: May 2004

Between the cat kneading my pillow at 4:45 and the police helicopter circling the neighborhood at 5:00, there wasn't much sense in trying to start the holiday weekend with a lazy, late snooze.
Just as well, I guess. Plenty to do today and after a cup or three of coffee I might get an earlier than planned start on some of the house repair work on the to do list. I've already squeezed in some predawn artPlay by starting the final assembly of the "Thank you" books for the models who helped out with the light paint project. One is a sewn binding and one is another small accordion book. The third model... actually the first in the porject, said she'd rather have a t-shirt as some wearable art.
Partitioning my free time between the repair work I know needs to get done if we are ever to sell this place and get out of the city and the photographic projects I have in mind is becoming a bit of a balancing act. It's even harder when you factor in the weather and trying to schedule a model for the shoot. The long range weather forecasts are notoriously inaccurate and everyone seems to have such a busy schedule these days that it takes a miracle for both the model's schedule and the weather to coincide for a successful session.
I have been getting some inspiration for the wood nymph series through the pictorialist work of Annie Brigman. Her figure in nature work is astoundingly beautiful. The soft blending of form with the landscape's own curves and lines tugs at my soul.
The wood nymph/sprite project will probably involve some sort of costuming rather than the nude figure. I like the way the folds of nicely drapable fabric offset and accentuate the smoothness of skin. I just need to find a few simple costume ideas which don't require much in the way of sewing skill.
