My Archives: February 2005

Like any photographer, I'm always happy to have some new toys to play/work with. It's even better when they don't cost me a cent. I stopped by the Art Center the other day, both to drop off this semester's darkroom fee and to say "Thanks" for the use of the studio space. The photo instructor pointed out some new equipment the school had just picked up... two "White Lightning" strobe rigs and a seamless paper backdrop.

I'm still trying to figure out working with just one light, but with permission to use the school's new toys it will be nice to know that I can move up to more complex lighting whenever I'm ready. Use of the seamless paper backdrop will be a help, too. No more dragging yards of muslin for use as background.

One example of a Van Dyke print from last Saturday in the extended entry... not work safe, so click at your own risk. [more]

Still a crazy work schedule, but stole a few hours after Saturday's pile of scanning was done to work on some figure pieces in the studio. Using the ancient shutter in the Graflex GVII with a modern electronic strobe requires three hands but I muddled through well enough to have some decent negatives for alt-process play on Sunday.

One cyanotype example, with more in Van Dyke coming soon...
