07/06/2005 Entry: "Plus and minus"

The house repair and house hunting continues. Things are taking way longer than hoped or planned but they are getting done. The house may actually be in shape to place on the market soon, with any luck well before the real estate frenzy in our neighborhood dies down.

Took an early break from slapping on more drywall mud to drive out and peek at a cute farmhouse. Wanted to check the location before bothering the real estate agent for an official look. Just peering through the shaded windows, it looks like this place was completely remodeled by someone who knew what they were doing. Hardwood floors, ceiling fans, a spacious and well designed kitchen, front and back porches big enough for comfy rockers. Almost an acre of hilltop land, with views of a stream behind and the Patapsco river in front... and the downside... the railroad tracks about 200 feet away. Beautiful and quiet setting, but occasionally pierced by the loud squeal of train wheels against the curving track. The place has been on the market for a while and the price has steadily been dropping. I guess enough people are turned off by the proximity of the railroad to pass on the place. It's the best looking and best finished house we've seen so far but the railroad is a point of concern. I like trains but do I want one in my front yard?

Find out how often trains actually come through there.

I live 800 feet from railroad tracks. You get used to it.
