04/22/2004 Entry: "play day"

One of the side benefits of being a workaholic at a very seasonal job is that months go by with vacation days accumulating to the point where they become "use it or lose it." During the quiet weeks, I have no choice but to string together some 3 and 4 day weekends. It's rough, but I'll get by. Today worked nicely as one of them, with time to carry a Van Dyke print down to Maryland Art Place for their benefit exhibition Saturday evening. My first print hanging in a "real" gallery! So what if it is an open hanging as long as there is space on the walls and there is no curator or juror to sneak past? It'll be fun to see what the piece goes for at the silent auction. Since it is a benefit, I placed a starting bid low enough to almost ensure a sale. Split 50/50 with MAP, my cut will barely cover material costs, so someone may go home with a bargain.

The rest of the day and most of tomorrow will be devoted to the continued printing of the light paint images for my alt-process class. I'm not sure at all how I can even begin to display the finished work on the web. At this point, the unfolded accordion book will probaly span at least 30 feet, with images on both sides. How do you share 60 feet of alt-process print without a whole lot of horizontal scrolling? Break it down to 2 page sections, with thumbnails? Maybe... we'll see.
