04/09/2004 Entry: "Blue Van Dyke"

I've been printing like a mad man, running through half a dozen sheets of watercolor paper in the past few days. Mainly working in cyanotype and Van Dyke, I've also tried a few prints with the "Blue Van Dyke" process mentioned in Christopher James' book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes. It's not very controllable at all. As a matter of fact, it's pretty dependent on the "happy accident" factor. This could be a problem for someone like me who enjoys having at least some say in how the final image looks. Sometimes, though, you just have to trust to luck and hope for the best.

The work is beautiful---an amazing effect. I'm just getting started on this road of alternative printing so your work is very inspiring.
