09/21/2003 Entry: "Just enough sun"

I've seen daffodils in all shades of yellow, orange and even a few pink ones but the popupblue ones are pretty rare.

The weather man lied. The promised clearing this afternoon never happened and the sun remained mostly hidden behind the clouds. It took almost an hour for this to print in the weak UV rays. That's still quicker than it took the emulsion coating to dry, despite several precoats of spray starch sizing. The addition of the starch seemed to help control the amount of emulsion the cotton soaked up but only a bit. I may try arrowroot or gelatin if I try this stunt again.

Negative produced by contact printing a b/w print on to Arista lith film and developing in dilute (1:10) Dektol. Classic cyanotype emulsion from Photographers' Formulary applied with hake brush on a cotton t-shirt.
