[Previous entry: "blue weekend"] [Main Index] [Next entry: "pictures with Patti"] 07/17/2003 Entry: "if you like grain" If you like grain in your photos, you gotta love Kodak's HIE infrared film. If you are a real sucker for big blocks of silver, you'll fall in love with combining IR with lith printing techniques. Basically consisting of a gross overexposure of the photo paper combined with a severe underdevelopment in a dilute lith film developer, the process relies on infectious development to make its dramatic qualities possible. I had a chance to teach my former photography instructor about the strange world of lith a few nights ago. During the session, I made both a silver and a lith print of two frames from the roll of HIE shot a couple of weeks ago. These may not be entirely safe for a work environment, but do provide examples of IR and lith's wonderful handling of skin tones. Trying to get my equipment and mind ready for another trip back to the stream this weekend. I'll be better prepared this time and will probably leave most of the toys at home. It's looking like a pure pinhole shoot. More testing of that pesky Maco IR film is in order. I know I can find the right combo of exposure index and development to make it work in pinhole.

I usually prefer Silver, but I think the lith diffuses the image a bit making it more subtle. So.. I'm mixed on the two.. Good job... Posted by tyd @ 07/17/2003 03:25 PM ET
