01/19/2003 Entry: "coffee's ready"

Today was play day. A few chores taken care of but mostly photography silliness. Take one old coffee can, an empty soft drink can, some scraps of black mat board and a bunch of tape. Add one slightly demented pinhole photographer with some time on his hands and a hankering to play. It's far from the prettiest camera I ever made, as a matter of fact, it may well be the popupugliest.

It was too cold to wander far, so I snuck out to the curb and set the camera down for a popuptest. I got a little more vignetting at the top and bottom than I'd wanted but I could learn to like the panoramic format. Given the materials and time invested, I'm amazed it worked at all.

photogeek details follow...

CoffeCam specs:

film size - 4x5 in. sheet film
focal length - 75mm (equivalent to a 24mm lens on a 35mm)
shutter - manual sliding (aluminum strip with a hole between two scraps of mat board)
f-stop - approx. 180-200 or so

test exposure:
Arista 125 film
exposure time - "one thousand, two thousand"
developed in Rodinal 1:50 for 13 minutes @ 70 degrees
