02/23/2002 Entry: "emulsion messes"

Well, that was an interesting experience.
Learned lots and lots, mostly through making mistakes. Glad I bought a twin pack of Polaroid 669 when I picked up the Daylab. I certainly wasted more than half of it in my typical fumbling learning style. I was about to toss in the towel on the image transfer method, when it occurred to me that maybe reading the directions again wouldn't be a bad idea. Yeah, yeah.. I know... real men don't read directions. Well, all the male code of behavior earned me was too many sheets of nasty looking yuck. After I wimped out and went back to the book (or PDF in this case), I was able to finally pull off a successful popupimage transfer.

Disregarding the instructions did lead to one happy adventure. Knowing full well that I should have let the Polaroid dry for at least ten hours, I went ahead and tried an emulsion lift about nine and a half hours early. It was ticklish but I think the long term chances for success are going to be better for me with the lift than transfer. It was definitely more fun being able to stretch and manipulate the emulsion, though it is one delicate process. It didn't work out too badly for my popupfirst effort.

Finally, another use for all those slides.
Be afraid, be very afraid. ;-)

These initial efforts are done on Strathmore, 140 lb., cold press watercolor paper.

You may be correct that smoother paper would be easier to work with. I'll certainly give it a try.
