10/25/2001 Entry: "Dia de los Muertos"

Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, a traditional holiday celebrated in Mexico , is a time for the departed souls to return to their homes and visit with loved ones. The celebration is spreading to areas of the United States. Woodburn,Oregon has a number of activities planned, including a traditional Day of the Dead procession, photo exhibits, an exhibit of traditional paper mache masks with a mask making workshop for children. An overview of the traditions and a glossary of terms associated with the celebration are also available.

Palomar College library in San Marcos has an exhibit of Mexican folk art and objects for Dia de los Muertos. The exhibit runs through November 15 and includes three glass cases filed with handmade skeleton marionettes, skulls and tiny skeletons sculpted from sugar pastes, prints, photographs and books from the library.

I wonder if HouseGuru's made any progress on her paper mache masks, especially that cool looking Flowered Skull.

You know, I read this post a coupla days ago and it didn't even occur to me to comment! Even with my name there! Geez, what is with me? Well, I do have guests visiting at the moment. But anyhow, I really need to take pix of my lil day o the dead skulls I've made - they're unfinished but even then look very cute - I do bunches of them in molds. Ok, must run teach class now!
