10/11/2001 Entry: "golden ratio"

Pretty good class last night, though too much material rushed through in too short a time. Cover 300 years of Greek philosophy in two and a half hours? A very light skimming at best, but some time was spent discussing The Divided Line, which led to a bit of geometry and the Golden Ratio or Golden Section.

Now, I'm far from a math wizard, calculus confuzzles me to no end, but there's just something about geometry that makes it almost magical. It all fits together so perfectly, making a bit of sense out of our chaotic world. The old "Rule of Thirds" about a pleasing visual composition, the arrangement of petals around a flower, the folding of line against square in a dance of number and plane.

Is this ratio hard wired into our system? What makes it such a "Divine Proportion?" If you create visual works of any kind, how much conscious thought do you give to this aspect or theory of design? Or do your designs naturally gravitate towards this ratio?

Full of silly questions tonight.

that classical balance is a lovely thing...and when it is intuitive it is quite astounding.
many have that sense, but don't realize, others never quite get it, even when trained.
but the most fun is to take that classical balance and play with it a little...wherein it still "works"...when is viewed, you are astounded and delighted, but don't quite understand why.
like magic.
