Picked up the Maco IR negatives from the lab last night on the way home from work but I was too wiped out, from the volume of scanning done at work (800 pages from journals) and from this darn respiratory bug that's been hanging on since Christmas, to do anything with them. The respiratory thing turned nasty yesterday and I was a bit too feverish to want to do more than crawl into bed and sleep for about 12 hours. I'm looking on the bright side... a cold is just a nuisance but a good fever is a cheap drunk. ;-)

The negs look a bit on the thin side for gettiing some decent images from but I'll give it a try as soon as possible. The contact sheet showed that this film may not have the same "in your face" IR effects as the Kodak HIE but it also seems to be much less contrasty. I did remember to take notes, so I can put the information gained to good use for the next roll. Yes, I think I'll try another one soon.

Civil War enthusiasts will soon be able to rest in hallowed ground in the Chancellorsville Memorial Garden. The cemetery site was a staging area from which Stonewall Jackson and his troops launched their flanking movement on Union positions. The plans for the memorial garden include not only burial sites, a mausoleum and cremation notches but also a lecture hall, a path with interpretive signs explaining the history of the area and possibly a camp site for Civil War re-enactors. Edward Laux, president of Chancellorsville Memorial Garden, said, "The concept is for the living and the dead."

The dispute over appropriate decorations and mementoes left at the grave continues at the Evergreen Cemetery in Everett, Washington. The descriptions of some items left by grieving family and friends brings to mind a true personal memorial, with a touch of the individual's life and love still present in the world.

The article goes on to briefly examine the changes that the past century has brought in the way that we deal with death in this country. In the 19th century, a funeral was a true family affair, with the deceased's loved ones able to use all the activities of preparing for burial as an outlet for their grief.

Those avenues for expression of human emotion have been usurped by the modern funeral industry, which now wants to go one step beyond and limit the placement of trinkets and small items under the guise of safety.

Dropped the roll of Maco 820c off at the lab Monday after work, so hopefully there'll be some new pictures coming soon, maybe even by Wednesday night if I can remember to grab a Zip disk on the way out the door in the morning and if I can sneak into the graphics lab at school to use a film scanner... and if my exposure settings were anywhere in the ballpark. Hhhmm, that's a lot of ifs.

The last thing...

Good ones all. Couldn't have said it better.

Go Ravens!

I see that Kaycee's going to be cheering on the Giants but as a Baltimore boy, I've got to side with her mom. Hope that someone gets that Spears song on tape. ;-)

Okay, call me a wimp if you must but the cold temperatures and chilly winds this morning had my fingers frozen enough that I could barely find the shutter release after an hour or so spent at Mount Carmel cemetery. I did find what I hope will be some good shots, including a few stones with enough ivy on them, despite the ice and snow covering parts of the ground, to show how well this new Maco film does with the IR "wood effect", displaying living foliage as a brilliant white.

There was a sad moment this morning. I had gone to Mount Carmel specifically to photograph one particular statue. I searched in vain for this lovely lady standing so tall and was disheartened to see that she had toppled to the ground, apparently as a result of the cycles of freeze/thaw over the past weeks. I tried to lift her back to her original stance but a life size statue is just too heavy for one person to deal with. The cemetery owners are doing a good deal of work on the property, clearing much of the overgrowth, so I have hopes that she will be returned to a proper upright position soon.
