Ever wonder why there's always a sock or two that disappears in the dryer? Some blame carelessness, others blame it on a warp in the time-space continuum. Some have blamed this on a Global Sock Conspiracy.

This is something I really should do. I've done it before, even stayed "clean" for six months or so. I am such a damn fool sometimes.

One reason that I haven't taken the digital plunge, besides the semi-permanent lack of funds, is that the technology is changing so quickly and prices should be dropping to a more reasonable level soon. A Taiwan company has just announced development of a 5 megapixel CMOS image device. When products with this chip hit the market, supposedly in the 3rd quarter, it should impact the price enough to make a digital a reasonable purchase for me.

Now, if there was only an inexpensive, high resolution digital imaging solution that'd work on a large format camera. I'll keep dreaming. ;-)

Chance to win a Kodak digital cam? They're giving away two, so take a shot at it. The answer is A.

An IR capable digital cam for 60 bucks?
Yahoo! Even if the image quality is as poor as I suspect, might be worth playing with one just for grins.

Sleep in the sun,
at the center of a circle of your friends.

Theresa Senft is writing her doctoral dissertation on women and webcams. Her proposal for "HOMECAM HEROINES: Auto-Performance, Gender and Celebrity on the World Wide Web"examines some interesting issues of the whole webcam phenomenon as performance art and as autobiography.

I put my webcam up more as a fun tech/geek exercise than as any sort of performance. If you do chance to look at it, all you are going to see is some middle-aged white guy sitting in front of a computer. If/when I remember to turn it on, I quickly forget that it's on. There's no sense of performance, I don't feel as if on stage.

I'm more comfortable behind the lens than in front of it. Even my theater experience in high school and college was of the behind the scenes nature. So, kind of a contradiction for me to even have one, isn't it?

Never said that I made sense. ;-)

The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, WI is having a two part photography workshop on January 13 and 20. The "Frozen Landscapes Advanced Photography" workshop will focus -pardon the pun - on film selection, composition and techniques of winter photography.

Although a cemetery can be designed and constructed to work well with the environment, bringing a park atmosphere to any neighborhood, I've got to agree with the protestors on this one. Planning to build a cemetery on land that is known to be prone to landslides and flooding is a really bad idea.

Amber hit the nail on the head with this one.
Proud... that's about the only word that does them all justice.

I've tried to write as well as I know how, as freely as I can, but the folks on Amber's list do it so well and with such heart and soul that I might as well trade this keyboard in for a box of crayons. These folks can not only show you the world through their eyes, they can help you see it through your own. I've got to agree with Amber's choices and I hope she won't mind if I add a few of my own to the bloggers to be proud of list.

Catherine Jamieson and her combination of writing and photography will make you smile and cry and wonder at the beauty and joy to be found in something as simple as a stack of firewood, a rutted driveway or a meal at a small town diner. She has a wonderful ability to capture the light, with both camera and word.

Saundra, in both a journal and a blog, continually amazes me with the feeling, clarity and just downright skillful mastery of her craft. She'll take you gently by the hand and lead you on a journey that has you holding on for dear life.

Already on Amber's list but worthy of a second mention and so much more, Kaycee has a moral strength of such ferocity, a heart of such wonder and a mind of such crystalline clarity that she goes well beyond the self claimed title of "warrior". She is Samaurai, combining a fighting spirit with a view of the world which a Zen master would envy. She sees the truth and she tells it straight with a wisdom beyond her years.

I'm sure it was modesty that prevented Amber from adding one more name, her own, to her list of bloggers that can take a bit of text on your monitor and turn it into a finely honed carbon steel blade that slices life open in a way that lets you look inside at all the moving parts.

So, yeah, Amber, proud is the word.

Also dug up at the Political Graveyard....
Happy Birthday to Richard Nixon ;-)

10:12 PM ::link::

What are the most common cemetery names? According to the rankings at the Political Graveyard, Evergreen tops the non-religious list with a score of 90, while Presbyterian takes overall honors with 156. I guess I'll have to consider including more specific location information in the listings here.

Using a GPS (Global Positioning System) device in concert with information from the U.S. Geological Survey database of geographic names can help in locating a cemetery in unfamiliar territory. No more relying on inaccurate directions, just enter the longitude and latitude (listed in the USGS info) of your destination and go find those tombstones.

Kodak's magazine has some cold weather tips to help you get the most out of your winter photography. From the basics of how to dress for warmth to some tips on avoiding static artifacts on your film from too rapid rewinds, it's almost enough to make the cold fun. Waiting eagerly for spring to return, myself. ;-)

Language can be such a wonderful tool in helping to alleviate the day to day tensions and frustrations that all of us experience. Writing about your troubles, committing the demons to a text prison, can be a refreshing experience. Even speaking them out loud can free you from stress. Of course, to do it well, you'd better enroll in the The Khrys Taylor Professional Cussing Course.

A Montana rheumatologist is using his nature photography to brighten the spirits and lighten the atmosphere in an exhibit at Deaconess Billings Clinic. A good photo can offer a path for the mind to wander and explore. Nature photos in particular seem to call to a common element in all of us, bringing the delights of the outside world to our eyes no matter where we may be.

A number of years ago, I attended a presentation by a company that planned to distribute artwork to hospitals. They had a pretty unique idea and I've wondered why it didn't catch on and spread. They took a look at the "audience" for art in most hospital waiting areas, hallways, etc. While ambulatory patients and those in wheelchairs could quite easily enjoy the art hanging on the walls, the patients on stretchers had nothing to do but count the holes in the ceiling tiles. Their solution was a pretty innovative one, I thought. Mount artwork on the ceiling tiles. So simple yet such a cool idea... easy enough to replace the tiles and move the artwork from one location to another and a great way to provide some moments of relief to those that need it the most.

I've been working my tail off most of the weekend on a project summary report for the final "Capstone" course of a series of classes through the Johns Hopkins School of Professional Studies in Business and Education. It's been an interesting time in which I've learned quite a bit. A lot of the aspects of web programming became, if not clear, then definitely less muddy. I think I learned how useful a tool like a database can be in not only creating but maintaining a web site. The instructors have been quite helpful, willing to turn you loose to learn on your own when they sense your capabilities in an area but also willing to take the time to explain something in a way that made sense to me. I'm almost sorry to see the sessions draw to an end. I was so focused on getting to this point, now I'm not sure which way to jump next.
9:53 PM ::link::

This large format adventure that I'm contemplating may be... make that definitely will be... a much bigger deal than I anticipated. I wish that I could find the gumption to just jump in and do it. I'm like that with all new things though. I'll agonize for months, then take the plunge and enjoy the hell out of something. Maybe someday I'll figure out that the sooner I get going with the new adventure, the more fun I'll have with it.
