Saturday, January 06, 2001Not a fun day yet but a productive one so far. Had an early morning, post holiday bill paying frenzy, to get them all off in the mail before the postal rate goes up tomorrow. Then back from the post office to undeck the halls, playing the match game between decorations on the tree and the little shapes in the plastic dividers of the boxes. The game should get a little easier every year. There's always a casualty or two... sometimes more if the cat gets it into her head to climb the tree. The number of empty spots in the boxes should get greater, the number of ornaments should shrink. Or at least that's what logic tells me. It never seems to work that way though.
I'm not sure I follow what the artist is trying to do here...
Friday, January 05, 2001A funeral home in Portland, Oregon has set up a price comparison grid to aid families shopping for funeral services.
Oakland, California's Mountain View Cemetery is the resting place of notable Bay Area historic figures such as railroad magnate Charles Crocker and the chocolate kings, the Ghirardelli family. Tours are offered on the second Saturday of each month.
Motorola and SoundVision are teaming up with a new digital camera design. Using Motorola's CMOS imaging chip, which needs only 250mW of power, we should see some new image capture toys coming out of this soon.
In other money raising efforts, the Bluffton Cemetery and Buck Island Cemetery have been united by a new fence. Divided for years into separate white and black sections, the funds for the new fence joining the two cemeteries was raised through an outstanding community effort. Way to go, Bluffton!
Thursday, January 04, 2001If you don't think that your own blog is worth a lousy ten bucks for Blogger's Server Fund, is there some blogger out there that you really enjoy reading? Someone that has a way with words that can crank your mind and your heart in two different directions and leave you smiling? Well then cough up a few bucks in honor of your favorite blog.
Still mulling over the digital versus large format versus what_ever_other_silly_idea, though leaning more towards the large format route. The cost of taking the plunge has me a little worried, but if there's anything left over after Christmas bills, taxes and tuition, a little might get set aside towards venturing into large format. I know that it would be a substantial investment but I hope that the rewards in terms of learning and improving would be substantial as well.
How to Wash the Cat, shamelessly borrowed from Amber. More of a dog person, myself, but our latest cat is sort of a dog trapped in the body of a feline, so we get along okay. I can even scratch her belly without fear of slashing claws. I'm still amazed by any cat's ability to throw up in the exact shape and size of a bare human foot.
Congratulations to the winners of the 2001 Golden Tomb award from my good friend Jacqueline's Gothic Tomb cemetery photo site.
Wednesday, January 03, 2001Using the ancient Greek structure as its focal point, the album "The Acropolis of Athens: Photographs 1839-1959" chronicles not only the changes to the building but also the growth of photographic technology.
Doing a happy dance for Kaycee's new look and her good news! :)
Tuesday, January 02, 2001The Christmas Box Angel, a memorial statue and movement to help parents grieve and heal following the loss of a child, has spread from a small beginning in Salt Lake City, Utah to cross the nation and extend around the world. With over a dozen statues in place, there are plans to erect over 30 new ones in memorial parks as far away as Australia.
Ramona du Houx, of Solon, Maine uses a technique that she describes as "Lightgraphs" to evoke a more painterly feel in her images. It sounds interesting, combining a slow shutter speed and some small camera movement about a key focal point.
Despite the cold blast of winter that's descended here recently, I managed to sneak over to one of my favorites, Mount Carmel cemetery. It was only a few months ago that I last visited the place but the cemetery owner has been busy cleaning the grounds and removing the overgrown brush and trees from several areas. While I am glad to see the cemetery being maintained, a part of me will miss the wilderness feel.
