ApogeePhoto has an article on imitating feel of monochrome infrared, using a few tricks in PhotoShop. I do like the otherworldly dream feeling that comes from infrared but not the hassles of using the film, so this looks like a good one for me to play with.

Photo.net has just announced a new marketplace with the goal of matching buyers and sellers of photographic services.

Kieran has just started up a site covering the cemeteries, churches and underground London. There are some good pictures of some of the lesser known tombs in HighGate Cemetery, with more to come soon.

Graveyards aren't just for humans, even advertisements deserve a resting place in the Advertising Graveyard.

Andera Crosses - the cast iron cemetery art of a Czech-American immigrant. These beautiful crosses are found almost exclusively in Czech Catholic graveyards.

Just plain meanness... Senseless acts of destruction like this don't do a lot to bolster my faith in the goodness of my fellow humans. There has to be something wrong with an individual who would find pleasure in the destruction of a 200 year old tombstone. What was going through their mind to think that wanton vandalism would be a really good idea?

It's always interesting to observe the reactions you get when you share your interest in this fairly strange little hobby of wandering through old cemeteries. All too often you get funny looks and comments on your mental stability. Every once in a while, though, you find another fellow tombstone addict. I mentioned my interest today to a friend that I used to "work/volunteer" with online. I think both of our faces lit up when we discovered that, as she so nicely phrased it, " Well, we may be warped but at least we have each other!!!".

It's a shame that death and anything surrounding it is such a taboo subject in this culture. It is, after all, something we all must face up to eventually. Not that I am obsessed with death, to the contrary, contemplation of the end of life brings me a new appreciation for all the wonders that make up each moment.

What the heck is up with blogger now? Strange stuff...

Photocourse from Agfa, over 30 mini-courses in a wide variety of subjects. The level of instruction is geared towards those needing a few pointers in how to make their pictures better, it assumes that you know which end of the camera the light enters.

One more shameless plug for Wayne's walking tour of Greenmount Cemetery. If you are anywhere near the Baltimore area, love old cemeteries and history, then don't waste any more time. Contact Wayne and make a reservation to attend the last tour on the 28th. Tours begin inside the main gate of Green Mount at 9:30a.m.and last two hours. You'll want to spend more than 2 hours there once you've seen this wonderful Victorian cemetery. Luckily, the place is open until 4:00 p.m., so there's ample opportunity for browsing around on your own after the tour.

Willa's Halloween blog has some interesting links and shows a nice effort for a seasonal blog. Don't get distracted and miss taking a look at her main section, it's got some great stuff.

Angel of Light
Nothing at all to do with photography or cemeteries, just a pretty, happy painting.

This short explanation of the nature of light is almost poetical in both its structure and in the way it embraces the subject.

Using flash and available light for a portrait
Get the exposure right for shadow details and highlights using these methods. Covers use of flash as fill and main light, available light as main, with and without flash fill and flash as main with available as fill lighting.

Confused by the meaning or history of a symbol? This fantastic index, searchable by sign and word, will provide new insights into the many symbols found on tombstones.

Thanks to Suzanne for the link.

There is still one weekend left to enjoy the Walking Tour of Greenmount Cemetery. It only costs $10.00 and you get a two hour tour of a wonderful park like cemetery with a guide who is familiar with Baltimore's past and the stories of those buried at Greenmount. Wayne's been doing this for 16 years and conducts a well organized yet relaxed tour. The weekend before Halloween would be a perfect time for any cemetery lovers in the Baltimore region to get out and see this buried treasure. Let me know how you liked the tour.

As you may have determined by the "lessons learned" list below, I do not have great expectations for the results of my initial experience with pinhole photography. I still learned a lot. My many mistakes will not be repeated in the next pinhole, or in my case, "pinhead", adventure. I can't believe that I f...'d up so badly. I was lucky that I did not permanently damage the mirror assembly, which seemed to function just fine for subsequent exposures. I'll try it again soon, though I will wait to get back the roll with the experiments on it. After all, who knows, I may have gotten incredibly lucky and will have at least one usable exposure on it. Not that I'll know what I did right (see last item in list) but it will renew my desire to continue with this technique.
11:16 AM ::link::

Things not to do when trying your pinhole lens for the first time:

  • Don't worry that the lens adapter protrudes into the camera body and will interfere with the mirror. You can always perform radical surgery on your carefully crafted pinhole using a pocket knife.
  • No need to double check that you have your cable release in your camera bag. It was there the last time you needed it, right?
  • Carefully measure the size of your pinhole and focal length to calculate the effective f-stop. Use handy online calulator to print out a neat list that compares exposure settings with a normal lens to yield shutter speed to use with your pinhole. Leave list at home.
  • Do not take notes of technical factors used in your initial experiments. You have a good memory, no need to write anything down.

Swansea, MA will be getting a new cemetery soon. It will be the 43rd one for the town, which has run out of new lots to sell. The town has a number of private cemeteries and family graveyards dating back to the 1600's. Many of the older lots have fallen into disrepair and have become overgrown.
9:19 AM ::link::

Students from a Pennsylvania high school will be spending part of their Halloween weekend volunteering to clean up a 200-year old cemetery in Raccoon Creek State Park.

As more and more school systems are requiring their students to perform some sort of community service projects as a graduation requirement, we may see an increase in this sort of thing. It's a good way to combine service and education, putting the students in touch with their community's past.

I stepped outside a few minutes ago and above the noise of the city traffic, barking dogs and boom boxes a mystical sound came floating down from the sky. Just a bit of it, here and there, came fluttering through to me. A calling out of the changing seasons, a sound to make you pause, a sound to make you look up and wish you were with them. Geese.
7:41 PM ::link::

I wish I could learn to see like this.
5:31 PM ::link::

Go ahead, call me greedy and vain, too, while you're at it. Just looking for some feedback on how this whole mess is perceived out there. Is this worth doing? I've gotten a few very appreciative e-mails and they always make my day. :)
