Just back from a trek through 68 acres of Victorian urban/rural cemetery splendor. The Greenmount tour was fantastic, bringing the cemetery to life with tales of those buried there. Yes, I took lots of pictures and hope to have them up soon.
Friday, October 20, 2000Rochester, New York's Mount Hope cemetery is presented in a nicely organized fashion. Looks like some good stuff here and I hope thta more pictures will be added.
Design your own tombstone in the activities section of the Victoria's Ross Bay Cemetery. It'd make a nice decoration for Halloween, or even a cool costume.
Iconography of grave stones in West Virginia.
An examination of the markings of graves in Geauga county, Ohio, 1800-1825.
History and symbolism of the Celtic Cross.

Funeral customs and symbolism from an anthropological viewpoint. Brief article discussing various cultures' methods of dealing with death and disposal of the remains.
Thursday, October 19, 2000View cameras have always intrigued me, though I haven't had the chance to work with one yet. Moving into large format is an expensive step in both money and time, so I wish there was a way to ease into it, testing the waters before making a big commitment.
Pandora has a new painting, "Death Dream", on display and will have some new cemetery photos up shortly. The painting was done for a local gallery's special Halloween exhibition and has her special touch that makes a cemetery a friendly place to visit. Her new photos will concentrate on closeups of the details to be found in her favorite Fort Worth, Texas cemetery.
Rock the Vote is here on campus today, set up right out in front of the library. I'll be able to catch some music when I step outside for a break. Cool. :)
Salary cuts for the gardeners who tendBritish war graves are being spoken against today in the House of Lords. I hope they get things settled, as nothing makes a cemetery more pleasant to vist than well tended grounds, with living plants to contrast with the cold grey of the tombstones.
This Saturday brings history alive at the Oakwood Cemetery in Joliet, Illinois. Costume clad story tellers will recount the tales of their lives in this program, entitled "Buried Treasures".
More controversy over the flying of a Confederate flag, this time involving its use at a cemetery for Confederate POWs at Point Lookout, Maryland.
Bassatine cemetery, endangered by the planned construction of a ring road, brings cooperation in the Middle East, as Jews and Muslims work together to preserve their heritage.
Wednesday, October 18, 2000I am not sure where my photography will lead me. Part of me wants to explore digital manipulation of my photos, evolving my own style and vision. There's no denying that some beautiful images can result from this process. Another part of me wants to fully grasp all that can be derived from "traditional" methods, using mastery of accepted photographic technology to share the way I see the world. And the self doubting part of me, usually sitting quietly in the corner but always ready to jump up and scream, wonders whether I even have a vision worth sharing.
Reservations are in for the walking tour of Greenmount Cemetery. Two hours of soaking up history in one of Baltimore's older cemeteries on a Saturday morning. I hope that weather.com has the forecast correct, in the 70's with partly cloudy skies. I need some more pictures for that section of the site and picking up some local lore at the same time sounds like a great way to get it.
Digital Imaging versus photography... This article examines the need to clearly differentiate the two media.
Planning a Cemetery Photography Project
Mays Hil Cemetery restoration project in Sydney. Hasn't been updated in a while but it's a nice record of a revitalization of an historic cemetery.
Pre-Raphaelite images at Ophelia's Mirror.
Perfect fit? Tie the data from the scan in with 3D modeling software and the possible uses seem endless. No more generic people in your 3D art, it can be a "real" virtual person.
Where else can you keep your ancestor's tombstones? Sounds like this guy has a nice solution, right in his backyard with a rose bush growing between them.
Tuesday, October 17, 2000Dreamlike infrared pinhole cemetery photos.
Burial costs are pretty high in this country but in some places, you can have it all for a few chickens.
More coverage of the party for Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery.
Suzielda's Cemeteries Site contains some wonderful photographs of British and European cemeteries, an intriguing discussion of nineteenth century cemetery design, an extensive listing of links and some nicely manipulated cemetery photos.
The latest statistics from the Web Characterization Project show that the web continues to grow, but at a slightly slower pace. The bad news, from my perspective, is that the rate of growth of sites providing free access to non-trivial content is lower than that of both private sites and sites with non-meaningful content.

Thank you, AstroMan!
Happy birthday to Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery.
Useful collection of PhotoShop tips. Quick and easy ways to pick up the basics and more.
The GNIS United States and Territories Data Base Query Form is going to be a big help in locating area cemeteries. I'll need to swing by the local outdoor store to pick up the relevant quadrangles but given my love affair with maps, that won't be a big hardship.
Sunday, October 15, 2000Just so the afternoon wasn't a total photographic disaster, I started construction of a pinhole lens assembly using an extra body cap and some black mounting board. The design involves an outer support placed within a rectangular hole cut in the body cap, with a sliding lens carrier assembly. I am hoping that this will allow me to have both an easy way to change pinholes, thus varying the aperture, and a way to also change the focal length by sliding the lens carrier. There may be some slight vignetting with use at very short focal lengths but if that is the only problem I encounter, I will be quite pleased. It looks like it is coming together fairly well, though I do see a need to add some foam at the back edges of the outer support to control light leaks.
Arbutus Memorial Park was one of those awful sterile flat marker buried in the ground to make cutting the grass easier places. Not even worth getting out of the car, much less taking any pictures.
