Those infrared photos that had disappeared into the wilderness of closed photo stores have finally emerged in all their full sized glory. I'll be scanning them and upgrading the IR shots in the Lorraine Park section shortly.

I really like the look the infrared film imparts but I am not sure that all the trouble of getting it developed and printed is worth it. If I can find a shop that offers a reasonable price for full sized prints and is also willing to take on the hassles of developing the film, I might do some more on a regular basis. As things stand now, it will probably remain a once in awhile experimental treat.

I've been thinking of doing some more digital manipulation of some of the photos, even doing some montage work. Would it have a place here? Let me know what you think.

They call it a SQL Tutorial but there's enough here to go well beyond the tutorial stage. Definitely bookmarkable as a reference to return to when untangling a database.

I've been renewing my "love/hate" relationship with PHP. The logic of it all somehow makes a twisted sort of sense, which meshes with my twisted sort of mind. Now, if I could just get better with the syntax and stop chasing silly typos through line after line.

I know that small type looks so kewl that you can't resist using it but 8 points is well below the readablity threshold. If what you have to say is important, as I am sure it must be, and you want to share it with others, it certainly helps matters when the letters are large enough that they can be read.

Yes, I am turning into an old fart but even my new bifocals don't do much to help bring tiny type on a monitor into clarity.

Image and bandwidth thievery rankles me. Although I am quite flattered that anyone considers my photos worth "borrowing", I don't take kindly to folks who lift images without permission, especially when they link to the image file on my server. Just ask Jamie.

Tours of Baltimore's Greenmount Cemetery

These walking tours of Greenmount Cemetery will be held every Saturday in October. I'm going to try to catch one of them and add some more photos to the collection. Maybe I'll see you there. :)

The "Fountain of Faith" sculpture garden in the National Memorial Park, near Falls Church, VA is being restored. This collection of bronze statues set in a fountain took the sculptor, Carl Milles, 12 years to complete.

Are you an online addict?

What I found amazingly funny/sick about the site was not the test itself but rather the fact that one solution offered was an online clinic. So, they plan to help people spend less time online by having them spend more time online?

Cemetery of the Year awards.

Maybe we need an award like that in this country, not to dispell any doom and gloom but rather to increase the awareness of the beauty to be found in cemetery art.

Rumors of the eviction of Jim Morrison of the Doors, from his tomb at Pere Lachaise are unfounded.

Came home from an extra long day at work to find a quite pleasant surprise in the mail. Yes, the long awaited issue of Ancestry magazine had arrived with my photos illustrating an article on tombstone symbolism by Pam Reid. If you are a subscriber, it is on page 20-22. If you aren't a subscriber, look for a copy in your local library or at a large newstand or bookstore. This is the first time that any of my work has been published in a for real print magazine, so even though I was not paid anything, I am still thrilled.

Had a wonderful, if somewhat wet weekend in West Virginia. Saturday was a delight, with clear skies and warm sunshine. Of course, silly me had checked with weather.com before going and was all set for the predicted rainy chilly forecast, so no shorts, no swimming trunks, not even a T-shirt but plenty of warm wooly sweaters.

Every year, on the fourth weekend of September, a wonderful group of rock climbers gets together for a pot luck seafood feast at Seneca Rocks, WV. The idea started 14 years ago and has been carried on ever since 1987. Just show up with a delicious seafood dish, no Mrs. Pauls Fishsticks allowed, and share yours while enjoying a sample of what everyone else has brought along.

The weather cooperated for the party but later Saturday night the heavens opened and the rain poured down for hours. Our tent was not up to the conditions and started a new collection of puddles on the floor. The poor dog got so soaked that she started shaking to try to dry off her fur, spraying the inside of the tent with cold dog scented water. I took this as a wake up call, even though the sun was an hour away from rising and we packed up our gear and headed for the local restaurant for a delicious mountain country breakfast.

Whie we were recovering over a nice hot meal, the sun poked out from behind the clouds and sent a stream of golden light through the mists rising from the mountain valleys. The clouds hung low, clinging to the hillsides as the breeze slowly moved them along. Twisting in and out of the sunbeams, the clouds would change from gray to gold to brilliant white, and then back again.
