What a week this has been...
Piles of work getting ready for next semester, scanning an average of 450 pages a day. I'm close to exhausted and the weekend is looking just as crazy as the week.
Somehow, somewhere, I hope to be able to squeeze a few hours in to play with another roll of infrared film. The exposure settings I used last week seemed to work pretty well, though I'll continue to bracket, just to be safe.
I have no idea when I'd find the time but I would love to meet up with another cemetery photo fan here in this area. It would be reassuring to know that I am not the only one in the state that thinks it is a great hobby.

Is it more than coincidence that in the Britney Spears Guide to Semiconductor Physics web site, the word semiconductor is misspelled in the page's title? And what kind of geek do you have to be to notice something like that?

I just realized that every single birthday greeting I got yesterday came in electronic format, either as e-mail, a web card or a web page.
Always a day late and a dollar short, I thought it would be cool yesterday to see how many bloggers shared the same birthday. Little did I realize that Blogger itself was having a birthday. That certainly explains why all the searchs I tried using birthday and variations thereof came back with time-out errors. So, Happy Birthday, Blogger! I've never shared a birthday with an application but I couldn't imagine a better one to share it with.

Well, I gave it a shot... scanning the contact sheet of the infrared pictures from the weekend. You can see a few of them in the Loudon Park section.
They did not come out too badly, even though I lost the first third of the roll to my little loading mishap. I'll definitely be getting some larger prints made from this series and will rescan as soon as possible. The pictures are much sharper than they show here, due to starting with an original from the contact sheet. Getting a larger print to scan should help that considerably, I hope.

How old, you ask.... Relatively ancient compared to most of the folks that seem to be out there on the web. 46 years old today, damn near half a century. Now that's a frightening thought. ;-) Getting older certainly beats the alternative, though. We all know what day we were born on but the day you will die is an unknown. If you figure your age in the days or years that you have left, then we are all the same age because all you really have for sure is today.

The webcam was actually an early birthday present from my wife. She is like a little kid and could not restrain her excitement or curiousity until today. She bought it on Monday and lasted about 3 hours before starting to ask, "Would you like your present early?" Yeah... she's a great one for keeping secrets. ;-)
and yes... Happy Birthday to me :-)

Well, lets see if this thing will work right.

Good news on the hunt for a lab that can handle infrared film. :) With any luck at all, I should have at least a contact sheet by tomorrow and can either try scanning the negs or getting some prints made. Woooohooo!

I discovered that there is one thing more difficult than finding a photo store that stocks infrared film. That is finding a photo lab that can and will process the stuff. I did manage to track down a custom lab thatclais that they can do the job. I'm hoping that this won't cost an arm and a leg. On the other hand, maybe if the cost of processing infrared is outrageous, it might motivate me to start processing my own. I haven't played in a darkroom in years. I don't have the space for the full set up, with enlarger and all, but could probably at least develop the film itself.

I had a chance to get out and play with the infrared film a bit this morning. Had some troubles because the film is so sensitive and the felt light trap on the cartridge is so lame that it is recommended to be loaded into the camera in total darkness. Well, a few minutes in the closet took care of that, or so I thought. You can imagine my dismay when after snapping a few shots at a local cemetery, I noticed that the film was no longer advancing. I rewound as much as I dared and had no choice, cemeteries not being equipped with either darkrooms or small closets, but to open the camera in as shady a spot as I could find. Looks like I'll lose the first 5 or 6 shots but I hope that the entire roll didn't get fogged.
If even the last few shots emerge okay, I'll be happy. I was just planning this first roll as a test of exposure for the most part. I do hope that most of them come out though, as I did find some settings that should produce some nice effects, accentuating infrared's strange behavior.
Just so I don't forget for the next roll, these were shot in mostly bright sunlight, using a Quantaray R2 filter, 50mm lens, 1/100th sec. and bracketed at f8, f11, and f16. At least this will give me a starting point for the next roll.
