ColdMarble Musings

I have a meeting with a client tomorrow morning, not far from Lorraine Park, so it looks like I'll definitely be able to swing by there afterwards and grab some more pictures. I want to try working with black and white some more. Be nice to see what happens with it on a day that is not totally overcast and foggy, as was the trip to Oaklawn.

Here's a delightful family tradition of setting aside the second Saturday in August for a cemetery decorating celebration. They have been doing this for 100 years and 8 generations.

How could this have slipped my mind? I heard back from the folks at Ancestry magazine and my photos will be used in the September/October issue! Hooray!

Another delightful morning breathing plaster dust as the new closet takes shape. Drywall going up now, just taking five to try to remember life before being covered in white dust.

If all goes well today, may take some time tomorrow and try to get out to either Lorraine Park or Loudon Park for some more pictures. If life is really good, I'll have time and energy to get to both of them. That'd be a real treat. :)

Had a nice chat on AIM with Lisly, another Baltimore cemetery fan. We may try to hook up sometime for a joint photo excursion.

Got a very nice email today from a dear friend with a delightful rendering of some of my photos. :-)

Whither webrings? What does this new integration of Yahoo mean for the future of webrings? Every ring member needs to get a Yahoo ID? This sounds like step in the wrong direction. Do you really think that Yahoo is going to keep their fingers out of the pie? What's going to be next? Yeah, the server side navigational imagemap seems like an idea that will decrease the number of breaks in a ring, but it may well come with some massive penalties, like a delightful little advertisement put smack dab in the middle of all the navigation images. There have to be some alternatives.

Jury duty today...

What a delight. Eight hours stuffed in a room with about 300 other folks just as thrilled to be there as I was. Did not even get taken to a courtroom to be considered for a trial. At least I got a chance to finish reading MySQL by Paul DuBois.

Although as a loyal Mac user, I generally look askance at anything related to Microsoft, I've got to applaud these two guys. It's a cool project, one in which you can take an active part in right at home with your computer. Help find ET.

Okay, I admit it... I am an addict.
You knew that once I got my hands on the new pictures from Oaklawn cemetery, there'd be no way in the world to keep me from scanning and uploading them for your viewing pleasure. So go enjoy. :-)

Yippeee!! Just got a call from the friendly neighborhood camera store. The black and white film that they thought would not be done until next week is ready today. If... and that is a big if.. I can find the time this week, there may be some new shots of the Oaklawn cemetery by the weekend. Of course, an even bigger if is whether the pictures came out well at all. It's been a number of years since I shot black and white, so my fingers are crossed on these.

I wonder if the scientists investigating social percolation have taken a look at blogging? You've seen the phenomenon, I am sure. First one or two bloggers start something, like a quiz or survey or a saying, and then it spreads across darn near every page you see. Wonder what our critical concentration is?

This, however, is a bit on the wacky side. UFOs, magnetic anomolies, or just a joker with a keen sense of geometry and humor?

Glad to see that us cemetery lovers are getting a plug of sorts from Riothero. We are strange but not completely crazy. ;-)

Raising the Hunley

Not quite wwhat you think about when the phrase "burial at sea" is used, but that's what happened to the brave crew of the first submarine to ever sink another vessel. The historical significance of this find makes it interesting but also the glimpse that it offers into the lives and deaths of the men who sailed in her makes this particularly thrilling. There is something in the American conscience that is fascinated with anything associated with the Civil War. Although this early submarine sank over 130 years ago, its discovery is pulling at the hearts of many.

Also thinking of doing some more manipulations of the photos in Photoshop, going for a more interpretive view rather than the straight forward documentary style I have used so far. I'll continue with the regular shots, but may start another section in the site. I'd be interested in your views on this, so let me know.

Photo store says that the black and white prints will not be done until next weeK!?!

That is going to try my patience, as I really wanted to see how these turned out. They can do color in a few days, so why so long for black and white? Oh well... I'll be on pins and needles until then, wondering whether to continue with black and white, if they turn out, or just stick with color.

Confederate Hill historical background

The Sons of Confederate Veterans maintains a history and roster of the graves in Confederate Hill at Loudon Park.

Color test

My Results:

Existing situation: Sensitive; needs esthetic surroundings, or an equally sensitive and understanding partner with whom to share a warm intimacy.

Stress Sources: Wishes to be independent, unhampered, and free from any limitation or restriction, other than those which he imposes of himself or by his own choice and decision.

Restrained charactersitics: Willing to participate and to allow himself to become involved, but tries to fend off conflict and disturbance in order to reduce tension. Wants to broaden his fields of activity and insists that his hopes and ideas are realistic. Distressed by the fear that he may be prevented from doing what he wants; needs both peaceful conditions and quiet reassurance to restore his confidence. Able to achieve satisfaction through sexual activity.

Desired objective:Seeks the determination and elasticity of will necessary to establish himself and to make himself independent despite the difficulties of his situation. Wants to overcome opposition and achieve recognition.

Actual Problem: Strongly resists outside influence and any interference with his freedom to make his own decisions and plans. Works to establish and strengthen his own position.

What a wonderful morning for a Monday. Even though it promises to be a hot, humid and sticky typical summer mess, my day got off to a wonderful start.

I got an e-mail from a very dear friend who I had not heard from in quite sometime. In fact, it was this delightful person who first started me down the road of cemetery photography. Glad to know that you're doing so well, Jackie!

Another very talented artist sent me beautiful composition done in Bryce 3D. I hope that she'll put it up on the web and send me the URL, because I'd love to share it with you all. She said that she was inspired by my pictures and in turn, I am inspired by her work.

Well, I beat the rain... almost.

Headed over to the eastern edge of town to try my hand with some black and white film at the Oaklawn cemetery. The whole cemetery covers over 100 acres, though I only had the time to stroll through a small part of it and shoot one roll before the heavens opened up. There were some wonderful statues there and I think I got some good shots. I also tried a self portrait or two, using the tripod and timer. I have much less faith in these, so do not count on any ColdMarble pictures soon. ;-)

Yuckie weather forecast for today. Storms moving in later this afternoon so may not get my chance for a new photo expedition. :-( I love a good thunderstorm but do not want to be standing in the middle of a graveyard with all my camera equipment when one hits.

Plan to spend at least part of today removing splinters collected in yesterday's demolition project. Yes, I wore gloves, dust mask, full protective gear and all the modern household construction project accesories. Still managed to find some sharp little snagglies with my fingertips. If that works out and my shutter finger is okay, might try to do an expedition to some new cemeteries. More concerned about my left eye, though. I seem to have gotten a bit of plaster dust in it and it is sore and swollen with a lot of red streaks. I'd give it a good flushing out with water an use some eyedrops but I am a real wimp when it comes to putting anything in my eyes.
