The Non-reciprocal Law of Verbalization:
Talk about something good and it goes away.
Talk about something bad and it happens.

Got an e-mail from the CD cover folks...
along the lines of "Don't call us, we'll call you"

Will I get over it?
Yeah, but it still brings me down. :(

Dual processor G4! Yes... I feel the need for speed. After being chained to a PC at work all day, it is so nice to come home to my faithful and trusty Mac. Now, if I can scrape together my pennies and get one of these puppies... but who am I kidding? My present system is only a bit over a year old and does what I need way faster than I have any reason to expect, especially after being forced to use that spawn of Satan Dell PC at work.

Waiting to hear more on the possibility of one of my photos being used for a CD cover. It's been a few weeks since I first heard from the fellow and nothing since. Hoping but not getting my hopes up, if you know what I mean.

More inane drivelings from the completely out of touch management fools of my volunteer group with a large and yet to be named online organization. Most of us have been involved in this group for years, have a solid understanding of the team's mission and the environment within which we work and the situations likely to be encountered. Yet, this interloper feels that she can waltz in and offer "advice" that is so obvious that most of us figured it out after a week or so with the group, or picked it up by age five...

Is she really so stupid? Or is this a masquerade being played out for her bosses? I don't trust her a bit. She is loathe to share informnation that flows down from the top end of the organization, yet I have no doubt that she sends on to her bosses any and all communications that may make her look good while forstalling any of our complaints with sickening sweet platitudes. Ggggrrrrrrrrr!!!

GothicTomb promises some new photos in the near future as well. Looking forward to them and I'll be sure to let you know when they show up.

Looks like Pandora has some new shots of her recent swing through New England. I love the artistry shown in those classic old headstones. They just seem to scream out "Graveyard!" and pull up all the buried associations of the word from deep within your soul.

I've been meaning to shoot a few rolls of black and white film soon but this infrared photo has caught my eye. One more thing to add to the "to-do-list".

No matter how much care and thought you put into your photo, you'll need to do some work on it after you've scanned it. A quick review of some Photoshop Tips will help bring out the best in any shot you plan to add to your web site.

Guide to Better Pictures

Hhhhmmm... doesn't seem to be much here on photographing tombstones.
Still, a good basic guide for us amateur fumblers... er.. photographers.

Burial Grounds of Edinburgh by Monochrome images

Looking for some quality photos of the graveyards of Edinburgh? Also has a few pages devoted to other graveyards and of course... some great shots from Cimetiere du Pere-Lachaise, Paris.

Besides the wonderful cemetery photography, you can find quite a few shots of the Edinburgh area, both city and countryside. Makes me wish I had a glass of single malt whiskey. :)

Searching in vain for any other cemetery photo bloggers. If you know of one, please let me know.

Page of the Dead

A very well done site with emphasis on English, German and Austrian cemeteries. Includes a nice bit of biographical information about many of the famous writers, painters, and musicians featured here.

There's a special place in hell for people who scribble and underline in books.

My "day job" involves scanning textbooks, journals, articles, etc. to be converted to Adobe PDF format and posted on the web for students at the university. The OCR program has a really hard time deciphering characters when there is a big fat ink mark running through them. So, yours truly gets to spend way too much time in Photoshop, trying to remove as much of the obnoxious marks as possible. It's great fun.

On the other hand, if having a personal web page or site is a means of expressing yourself and your ideas, why would you want to use someone else's works in it? I realize that not everyone has the tools or the talent to produce stunning graphics... one look through this site should be proof enough of that. ;-) But isn't the simplest of designs using something produced by your own mind and work more an indication of who you are and what your purpose in having a web site is than anything that may be found on the web? Make it yours and be proud of it.

You think your graphics suck? Here's a little secret... everyone thinks that their graphics suck. I have yet to meet an artist who was completely satisfied with what they produced. It's just a part of human nature to strive to make things better. That's why the web is in a constant state of flux.

WebGuard

I am not some terrible ogre that rages at the unfairness and dishonesty of linking directly to graphics on my server. I just don't like people taking things without asking first. In general, I am quite flattered whenever anyone requests permission to use anything at all on this site. As far as I am concerend, it is perhaps the highest praise that can be given. Since asking to use one of my pictures puts me in a really good and generous mood, I am quite likely to say yes, if you bother to ask.

On the other hand, when I check my referrer logs and run across someone "borrowing" not only an image but my bandwidth allotment as well....

Let's just say that it is not all that hard to change an image file name and upload a new picture using the old file name. ;-)
