Wish the same could have been said of some of the other scripts I've run across. I just finished wrestling with a guestbook script that had a large number of errors in it. I got it to work but it is no great shakes and I'll most likely wind up writing something myself.

Thanks to Sascha at phtml.com for the nice PHP counter script. My hosting service wasn't logging the query string part of any URLs, so I was left very much in the dark as to which of the cemetery photos were being viewed. Well, yes, I did have information on the image files but not a quick and easy way to know what was up. These scripts did the job very nicely. They were easy to configure and install and none of the dreaded "parse error" or Internal Server errors reared their ugly heads.

On the reading list this week, continuing to follow the Richard Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell. A good adventure read for those who enjoy military history.

Swedish photographer's site exploring how different cultures deal with death.

Hoping to be able to coordinate a road trip with another cemetery photo fan this summer. We've worked together on some projects in the past via e-mail and I've looked forward to having a chance to do a photo shoot with them for a long time. All sorts of interesting ideas percolating. Now, if only our schedules can mesh and let this really happen. :)

I've got to stop messing around with this site and deal with the "real world" more. Had a call from a client yesterday wondering what progress had been made on his web site to be. Time just seems to slip right by, not that I had promised a delivery date to him. Maybe I should set up a meeting to go over some marketing considerations, target audience thumbnails and get the product photos that I need to really start building the site. Yeah... that would be a good thing.

Switching over to a database and PHP driven site has set my mind to contemplating some new and hopefully helpful additions. Might as well take advantage of all the technlogy offers, if I can get my poor addled brain to figure it all out. Perhaps a rating system for the pictures, with the ability to sort by rank... or search for a category of image. It has certainly made maintenance of the site easier. I'm just sorry that it took me so long to get a handle on scripting and databases. Fun toys.

A few new additions to the links page last night:

I am always amazed at the number of people who enjoy this particular hobby or is it more of an addiction?

So... why cemeteries?

If you have gotten this far along in my site, I am sure you have your own reasons for enjoying them.

I like to wander through an open field filled with beautiful and interesting statues, sort of like an outdoor sculpture gallery. There is something about sculpture that makes it seem more "real" than other art, and when you add in the personal elements that are a large part of the funeral and memorial sculpture, well, that just makes it even better.

The historical side of it is interesting too. I've begun to develop a greater appreciation for this city's past as a result of my graveyard wanderings. These stone chronicles of the lives that made this city have shown me how the many cultures that came to this country in search of a new life have been able to retain their identity through the passage of years. Baltimore has always been a collection of neighborhoods, each with its own unique flavor and this is preserved in its cemeteries.

Finally, it gives me a chance to explore photography, trying different methods and techniques, a path towards developing my own style.

New to this journal game but we'll see how it goes. Will sharing the twisted paths that my thoughts wander make this a better site? Who knows? You do, for one and I'd like to hear from you if you think this adds anything at all or if I am just wasting my time and yours with this.

Of course, I will try to make this a bit more interesting than this initial post which is really nothing more than a test of sorts.
